Churchill’s War Rooms: Life Underground
Calum combines the historical importance of the bunker and its atmospheric past with a zest for storytelling, to create a truly engaging Experience.
About the Experience
This Experience will be led by Calum, whose love of History was ignited at St Pauls and continued at Durham University.
Imagine standing in the very spot where some of the most momentous decisions of the 20th Century were made? In this experience your child will be able to do exactly that. Your child will explore how the government managed to function during wartime and what daily life was like for those who lived in the bunker.
How did the Government function during wartime?
Many of the most important decisions of the 20th century were made in Churchill’s War Rooms. Calum will help your child to explore why the War Rooms exist and how they helped the government to continue to operate during the Blitz.
How severe was the threat of espionage and how did they mitigate it?
Nothing excites a child more than talk of spies! Calum will explore the threat of espionage with your child, explaining to them steps that were taken to mitigate its risk.
What was daily life like for someone working in the war rooms?
Children cannot fail to be mesmerised by the immersive experience of exploring Churchill’s War Rooms. Calum will guide your child through specific artefacts and exhibitions to help them gain an understanding of what daily life was like for someone stationed in Churchill’s War Rooms.

Bio: It’s possible to trace my passion for both history and drama back to car journeys as a child, listening to the Horrible History audiobooks. The fact that I’m still able to recite sections from memory suggests two things: firstly, that my parents played very little else and second, that I clearly found it engaging and inspiring. All throughout my academic and now professional life I’ve been drawn to topics and projects which are nuanced and interesting but also don’t take themselves too seriously (I had a university lecturer who would regularly show us the Horrible History songs, nobody skipped those seminars). That’s something I now reflect in my own practice, combining the engaging with the exciting to hopefully spark the same passion I found.
