The Tower of London: Fortress, Palace or Prison
The Tower of London serves as a fantastic lens through with to view the change and growth of London over the past millennia. Let Calum share his passion with your child in this memorable Experience.
About the Experience
This Experience will be led by Calum, whose love of History was ignited at St Pauls and continued at Durham University.
There’s far more to the Tower of London than simply where the Crown Jewels are housed – let Calum lead your child round the Tower as they discover the various uses it has had throughout history. During the Experience your child will learn why William the Conqueror built the Tower here and explore what the average Londoner in the 1600s thought of the Tower.
William the Conqueror
Why did William the Conqueror build the Tower in the 1070s? Was it to demonstrate his power, or to provide a defensive fortress? Calum will explore this with your child, noting the various uses that the Tower has had throughout history.
London in the 1600s
Have you ever wondered what the average Londoner thought of the Tower of London in the 1600s? Callum will help your child to explore this very question, making use of the interactive exhibitions at the Tower.
Learn about the Stuarts
Your child will learn all about the Stuart Restoration. By exploring the prominent role the Tower of London played in Charles II’s coronation, Calum will teach your child all about this important era for the Royal Family and British history in general.

Bio: It’s possible to trace my passion for both history and drama back to car journeys as a child, listening to the Horrible History audiobooks. The fact that I’m still able to recite sections from memory suggests two things: firstly, that my parents played very little else and second, that I clearly found it engaging and inspiring. All throughout my academic and now professional life I’ve been drawn to topics and projects which are nuanced and interesting but also don’t take themselves too seriously (I had a university lecturer who would regularly show us the Horrible History songs, nobody skipped those seminars). That’s something I now reflect in my own practice, combining the engaging with the exciting to hopefully spark the same passion I found.
